Time Takes a Cigarette by Tony Whitakertime takes a cigarette
when Fall finds life snug
in the afterglow of growth
where leaves find
a friendly breeze freed
to paint the forest floor
barren branches and bears’ dens
left to gestate
next year’s brooding buds

| Posted by Kristina Woodhill on 10/22/09 at 05:57 PM This is a must-read-aloud - the words have that teeth-to-tongue bite and power that gives that special pause to a good poem. My new favorite of yours - "friendly breeze freed to paint the forest floor" - gad, I love that. Your maple leaf picture comes to mind. Thank you! |
