lanterns

by Christina Butcher

when the
night folds back
cracks the sky

i'll catch you up
my king of kings

when the light
creeps up
pricks and punctures

i'll tack you down
and paste you
to my memory

in my brain

i'll fold you
[wallet size]

bend you
[lengthwise]

carve you out
with crayons

i'll plug you in
like a light bright

let it pierce my heart

a wild thing
you're a king of kings

you're my lantern
burning bright
when the night falls

rampant
