Staring Out at the Rain by Ken HarnischSinging “Some Enchanted Evening”
And pitching the anarchy
That the best version I ever heard
Was by Jay and the Americans
I stand in the doorway
Staring out at the rain.
“Don’t splotch in the puddles,”
I remember my mother saying
Back when yellow slickers were in vogue
And going out on Saturdays
Was de rigueur, even in the storms
I found things swirling
In the water that had no name
And made boats for ants to
Float through stygian passages
Knighting them, despite their otherwise,
As the new Columbuses of the subterranean
I don’t remember the day
I found no joy in making
Life an expedition for insects
But I think the insects
Appreciated my blossoming
Into something resembling
Rational
I found rainy days to be annoying
In the end, just as
The quality of my raincoats
Improved. I wore London Fogs
And cursed the water that dappled them
Even in the spring
Now I stand in the doorway
Singing, you may meet a stranger
And wonder, if it is so,
Will my chances improve
Walking in the rain
Or surrendering all exotic impulses
That still thrum in me and taking the car.

| Posted by George Hoerner on 10/06/09 at 08:43 PM You bring out so many memories in this piece. I think my vision of love was fashioned while watching the movies of the late 40's and early 50's. Thanks Ken. |

Humphrey on 10/07/09 at 01:55 PM Surrender to exotic impulses and skip the car, grab your London Fog and galoshes, a bright umbrella and head for the nearest coffee shop or elsewhere to find shelter and you may as you stand shaking off the rain in the doorway meet someone else that finds the thrumming of the silver drops nostalgic and romantic. smh. |
| Posted by Melissa Arel on 10/08/09 at 01:58 AM I loved the rain as a child and still do :) Thanks for the reminder. |

| Posted by Tony Whitaker on 10/12/09 at 06:08 AM Being 55 the images you conjure in this piece brought a knowing smile of my own wet days and building stygian passages for what may. Plus, as a musician, Jay and the Americans can't hurt! |
