a dog's valet

by Charlie Morgan

he waits at home; i wait to be home;
our minds busy with usual things.

he's counting flys and lizards;
i'm counting hours and minutes.

his thoughts wander as does his eyes;
ditto here, but my thoughts wonder too.

he can't see me, i can see him projected
by my mind's eye, he's waiting on me.

a tail-wag let's me know i'm home;
his body wiggles and shakes with joy,

he's foolish enough to think i'm master;
and i'm foolish enough to think so too.

really, i'm his valet, his man-servant;
i open doors for him, feed him and keep

our foolishness alive and kicking. still
he allows me to believe i'm the sole ruler.

KUDOS!I love this, Charliel.Forget the academic critique- I just find it personally appealing and an enjoyable read.And it is the plain truth of which your poetics expresses so well. I am saving this one. :)

Aren't dogs wonderful! You've said it so caringly.You've got it right who is really "master"!

Goodun, Chaz. I can picture that tail wagging and body shaking and the smile on your face. I love the way you show us the relationship between you two with the valet idea. I was trying to remember what I had learned eons ago about the Native American belief about dogs and couldn't - so I went to a website and found this: "One legend says that Dog made a conscious choice to link their lives to humankind. The legend says that as the 'door' to the spirit realm began to close to humankind, Dog lept through to live alongside humans. And because of this singular devotion and sacrifice, Native American spirituality has since revered the dog."
