The Cenotaph and the Beaver

by Shannon McEwen

Head bent earnestly
Ten whole
Long
agonizing seconds
Of stillness

Raindrops plop
plop.
plop
Silence deepens

A blue beaver tail twists then dips
Down,
down,
down

A pink tongue slips
Between silent lips
Catches three fat salty drops

A shuffle
A Giggle
A firm hand on small shoulders

One minute
Thirty five
Agonizing seconds

Of stillness to endure
