The Brotherhood of Mind

by Tony Whitaker

As we stand alone under the
surface of our Earth, against
the tyranny of those who roam
the surface of our once sacred stone
seen, so long ago, as a light
which burned in all
now devoid of that flicker of a flame

But now time forces us to fight
against the curse of the injustice
of the Order, ladled in the lessons of
our teachers through their
sallow eyes straining at
soured supper for our souls,
“We are all the same and no one
dares use the words, ‘ I prefer’”, or
you shall suffer segregation to
some barren land, where
others preach to suffer such
anti-social lies, to die

For the state shall say what is done and
what we do as is needed for
the course of the collective cause and
not another thought shall pass the
passive pupils prying minds once
their lives are prescribed by
the leaders of the social conscience,
no matter what the meter of was once
eager and enquiring minds
whether scholarly or slow

Now the moths beat against the street lights
as we smile bathed in rays
at once lit from deep within as
we look up from the gloom
we clamber to our doom to
defend this cur said wish, “to know”,
to fight those who perform their foul roles in
working to unwind their
coiled campaign for the cause of

Author's Note: An experiment in stream of consciousness writing, the theme of which springs from my own philosophy in life as inspired by Ayn Rand in part. This particular piece was sparked by the reading of her "Anthem" and fear we are learning to lose the term "I" in favor of "We" and where my beloved land is leaning!

Great write Tony. We have too many lawyers in office and who else but a lawyer knows how to redefine the word freedom.

Yes, good write, Tony. Thought provoking...as for freedom, I recall Camus: "Without freedom, no art; art lives only on the restraints it imposes on itself, and dies of all others." Thanks.

I like the highly individualistic flow of this remembering when I was enamored of Ayn and her stunning characters. Now now longer in love, I appreciate the creations of her legions and the respect they have for the individual. Creative piece, Tony. Thanks.
