9/11 From Switzerland

by Tony Whitaker

An American flag fulfills me
a beacon from our balcony in Basel
four thousand miles from home.
But as it waves so proudly
I do not feel alone

I reminisce to a whispered wisp
of a day we lost our shroud
A shroud which kept us warm
from the cold taste of terror
a shroud which made us proud
when around the world was none
a shroud which brutally blinded us
too late to see the gun

Will we ever recover
from that period of infinite pain
where so many souls were lost
and tears trailed like drains?

Now its time to take the stand
as our Founding Fathers stood
who broke that yoke of torture
with words of deeds and action
for the people's rights for good

So, I say let's not forget
the death knell of that day
but forgiving the fear and hate we must,
if we are just,
which made our country great

'Remember Pearl Harbor!'
was once our country’s cry
those people we once despised
not so many years ago
are now friends in peace
and a people we call ally

But for now we are forced
to fight for what is right
for freedom costs the blood of men
where evil roams the night

This is not a dream
where a choice is yours to make
to boost a brave new world
For a brand new day will dawn
where the ignorance
of hate and war
and the term “terrorist”
is gone!

Author's Note: I was motivated by today's POTD and had to put to paper my thoughts from where I now live. So although it was quick, it comes from my current thoughts and feelings so many miles from home

I truly love the sentiments expressed in this poem. I just wish I could believe in that hope that one day the term "terrorists" will be gone. For a poem written spontaneously,I think you did an excellent job, Tony.

Beautiful memorial, Tony. The fifth stanza is my favorite. It is a good day to reflect on the explosiveness of terror and fear based living. God bless America, sweet land of liberty...

p.s. like Melanie, I'm afraid there will always be threatening bullies in the schoolyard until Christ returns and we grow up into the full measure of Christlikeness...

Powerful message delivered beautifully. Good point that today's enemy may be tomorrow's friend. It has happened so many times. I do so long for that brand new day to dawn where the ignorance of hate and war and the term “terrorist” is gone!

I can so find myself in your thoughts and feelings, thank you.

Well spoken Tony. We Canadians are your "ally" also, having lost citizens in the twin towers attack.

Terrorism is like rape. It will not be gone until we are.

Humanity is tattooed with their special beliefs and fears, but a real human heart with divine love in it beats with the same glow under all the patterns of all earth's thousand tribes. Will we ever lear...maybe not. Excellent poetics. Thanks.

Until those Einstein called jewish Nazis in a full front page New York Times article are stopped from blowing up Buildings like the King David Hotel, OKC Murrah Building, The WTC's TWO times, the Pentagon Accounting office where it was discovered that Rabbi Dov Zakheim as Comptroller had "lost' 2.3 Trillion dollars on 9-10-01AD then the word terrorist as Menachim Begin proudly called himself will never disappear from our world sadly. And either they all do, or all of humanity will most likely. Nice work.
