The Pass

by Tony Whitaker

there is a reason,
though difficult to do,
allowing the loss of love
to leave your life

as your patent soul parks itself
you often painfully pause to ponder,
praying, “dear God”
make all this just...fade away

but truth, at times, paves a stony trail,
all those years together you still feels the same
but soon you'll see, to cease that wind
that whispering voice, so you may mend

and as you wade through these emotive waves,
this passing storm inside your soul
i ask once again to call me, ‘friend’
to give comfort with a shoulder or a grin?

for soon this steep and narrowed path
as time takes you to that storied pass
to clear and bright new you,
with laughter. as the blues bids 'adieu'

i hope you know, though long ago,
i was a friend who held you so
now i vow, in weather fair or foul,
i'll help you, dear,
to the pass, to peer,
as friends forever
to the end
which always near

Wow, there's nothing better than the unconditional love of a good friend. I hope your friend grasps your life saving help and never lets go.

This is lovely, Tony. I don't know where I'd have been this last year without my friends to give me this very same reminder. It does pass, the valley so difficult to walk, but there IS a new dawn on the upside of the journey. Thank you for caring for your friend so very much!

And what a friend! To be able to linger in someone's pain is one of the great acts of love and is all too rare. Let's hope that your friend lives into your generous and kind spirit. I feel blessed by my discovery of you and your poetry, Tony. Thanks.
