This Peculiar Nakedness

by Glenn Currier

If love is a decision
then reading poetry
must be love.

A flight into the poet’s soul
to light on silver fibrils
of joy or ecstasy.

To sink below the line
into the dark waters
of death or sadness.

But the energy and time
of this deliberate journey
is an honor to be prized.

Praise the particle of trust
in the poet who admits us
into this peculiar nakedness.

I like to believe that love is a way of life and so is reading poetry. And sometimes one can simply fall in love with a poem and admire the poet for being the instrument that created such beauty.

What a wonderful summation of what "it" is. I love it!

Ooooh, I like that, "peculiar nakedness". It feels that way, a nakedness, and yet, there is a trust, a safety that goes along with the exposure, the disclosure. Along with love being a decision, and therefore, the decision to read a poet's work being equal to love. You've captured this very nicely.

I agree with Alison and Anne. They summed it up perfectly. Thank you for sharing this Glenn.

I enjoy the way the piece starts and then deliberately progresses toward its conclusion. The last stanza just rings. Great write.

A singular salute to both the writer and reader of poetry.
