If You Must

by Joe Cramer

An older couple sat near me,
I glanced in amazement
As they held hands,
Whispered in such hushed tones.
A tear fell from his eye,
She brushed it, tenderly
With the back of her hand.
I thought I might understand
The depth of their love.
I thought I would listen,
Eavesdrop, if you must.
So I heard a word, or two,
Carefully listening
To what was shared bewteen them.
They were planning their deaths,
Tombstones, with cremations and such,
And how they would commit suicide.

So sad... I wonder why, since they still together and obviously cared so much about each other.

Such a beautiful experience...poem, and such a tragic ending equally applied.
