just think on that

by Peter Humphreys

hey
hey you
who me
yes you
why
I want to tell you something
why
just bear with me for a minute
ok
just stop for a while
if you can
pull up a chair
make a coffee or a tea
and listen a while

can you remember
the first time
you saw a daisy
or saw the lush green trees of spring caressed by wind
or caught sight of someone you knew would be special to you
or fell into a ditch
or tried to touch the sky
or ran bare foot in the sand
or kissed a friend goodbye
or were in total despair
or sublime wonderment

well
in the time it has taken to read this poem
never mind conjure up your memories and imagings
over 100 people have died
and over 225 babies born

just think on that

Author's Note: According to the World Health Organization, some 56,ooo,ooo deaths occur each year, at the current global average. That works out to about 153,400 per day, or a little more than 100 per minute. For every death, there are a little over 2.25 births, or a something just over 350,000 per day.

Yeah, I remember reading about this not too long ago. I could never do anything with it like you've done here though. This is clever, clever stuff.

and which will we be closest to... getting the shovel or lend a hand to rock the cradle or maybe a turn at both. A local larger than life tv personality (capital city mayor) recently died and my main memory of him was for his little blurbs after the news entitled "The Bottom Line"... of course on his desk he had another legend printed and displayed, "Ready! Fire! Aim!" Which is how he lived... Does a body good to get back to basics of living... Enjoyed this.

Ponderous alright, Peter. I recalled this: "Death is more universal than life; everyone dies but not everyone lives." Thanks.

Oh yes, 7 billion is rapidly approaching. That is twice what we told in the 3rd grade that the world could support. Ah, let's try for 70 billion. Good write Peter.

A good reminder of this cycle and how we spend our time. Thank you.

I was listening to this all through yesterday and part of today and thought I'd spend a moment thanking you for your poem, my friend!
