Spring Break

by George Hoerner

spring sensing opportunity
stirs life into shallow ground
urging growth in dormant things
while winter shrinks from warmth
losing its grip upon the land
decided to leave for bitter weather
far to the north

as seagulls search for a sand dollar
but settle for a quarter sandwich
partially buried in warming sand
as they surf the sandy beach
praying for an influx of people
who might lazily leave tidbits

children smile snuggling soft sand
as older ones test the teasing waves
and all seem unaware that time
measures their every breath

Love the images of the beach and the last stanza. Good write!

...me too, george...and that (un)awareness of theirs [regarding time] is a blessing, eh? good write...

Oh, gees, George, you make me yearn for the beaches. It has been entirely too long. Clever bit with the searching seagulls. How often I have experienced these creatures flying their hunger all about insistent for attention and a sharing of the wealth. And then there is the final big question. How you do have a talent for involving me in the story and then thrusting me deeper and higher. Wonderful poem, George.
