ROUS by David NeubauerI can barely imagine how precious a thing
a map to the Swamps of What-If would be.
It's a terrible place, one that many people,
stronger, smarter than I, havestumbled into,
never to be seen or heard from again.
It's a terror, eating but never releasing,
always growing, always hungry.
I've heard the tales often enough...
"Don't step in the quicksand of
pointless dreaming, and avoid the
grasping vines of the imperfect tense."
I'm sure there were more, but I
appear to have forgotten them.
I suppose I have all the time in the world
to try and remember them,
while I slowly drown under
the weight of these vines. 04/13/2009 Author's Note: In the movie the Princess Bride, the characters wander into a swamp that nobody has ever traversed before. In this swamp, they are confronted with three dangers: The Lightning Sand, the Flame Spurt, and the ROUS. I draw parallels to the first two, but the Rodents of Unusual Size (ROUS) simply are the title.

Posted by George Hoerner on 04/14/09 at 02:08 PM Great write David. Few of stumble into this swamp and ever return to live a normal life. We always seem to have a vind wrapped round us pulling us back in. |
Posted by Kristina Woodhill on 04/14/09 at 02:54 PM Scary place that you have decribed well. What is ROUS? I like the idea of a map to such a place. Thank you. |
