clear night river sky

by Emily Sullivan

the pieces of our life
are burning bright in
a clear night river sky

and as fast as a bright
summer shooting star
sizzling across the
hot august river sky
you have gone

a million tiny memories
of you and me
are spread along
the changing currents

if i knew now
how fast our time
would fade against
the black night
and burn into the water

if i knew now
if i knew now

i would have taken
every waking moment
and thrown it back
into the starry sky

so when i look up
into the clear night
river sky
you and i would be
easy to find

sometimes i can still see
little pieces of our life
burning bright in
a clear night river sky

look for me
look for me

this poem enchants me so and conjures in me a similar predicament, which is to decry our fleeting time together, to fade far and away against the black night and burn into the water, but we know not, now not as you so aptly write or we might have been better prepared to get a better grip to make of such a time together as joyful spirits immersed in amber.
