New Pair of Shoes

by Jeffrey Parren

I bought
a new pair of work shoes
and on the day
I was to replace
the old with new

I became reminiscent.

I have walked many miles
in those old shoes.

In that pair alone
I had two nights
that I made over $1000
in just one night.

As I placed
the old next to new

I couldn't help
but notice the symbolism
jumping right at me.

The old shoes
worn down
losing form and shine
the insides torn apart
screamed for weeks
to be put out of their misery
yet now looked so sad.

The new shoes
standing firm and tall
wearing a factory shine
boasting intact insides
and gleaming with promise
of comfort and function.

I kept the old shoes
just in case
it didn't work out
with the new ones

but soon
they just took up space
and eventually
I just threw them out.

Sad really.

Nothing lasts forever. I keep old shoes also....just in case! Good write- very true.

Had to laugh, Jeffrey. The listing of your poem reads "New pair of hoes", and I'm thinking, oh cool, he's taken up gardening along with being a waiter. Nevertheless, the shoes is a great piece. I forget how important they are until I can't find my super comfy ones. I do hope these are working out for you. ;)

Ok, now the title is up there right, and now I just feel silly.....

Well done Jeffrey, we all have those old things we hand onto just in case. But the case sometimes grows old and is finally let go and yes it can be sad when we let go of something we've had that has been useful for so long.

it is sort of sad that things always seem to fade away, get old and worn and tired, as well as eventually just take up space... sigh.. the new will eventually get old too.. I can't figure out a way to stop that!
