a day is a life by Charlie Morgana yawn by the morning let me sneak in,
the day's maw was wide-open, gasping.
i yawned back in bemusement: the day
beckons me with such a gaping 24 hours?
to live, to love, to laugh, make sense?
Odie wagging his taut tail, indecisively;
chase that bird or chew on the Sun's rising.
birds, their singing, trilling a new day;
a day that is older, more a hoary mensch
than any of the days before, yet alone.
bolstered by the tomorrows left to come,
and shoulder-shrugging all yesterdays.
i draw an imaginary Maginot-line;
i forgot how reality sneaks-in on us
while we have the door open to breathe.
i throw a rock at the bird, missing;
on purpose. Odie's confused, barks.
i remember that i forgot how to taste
the enjoyment of a day sans reality
if it doesn't come with a grandson.

Posted by Joan Serratelli on 02/25/09 at 05:04 PM I agree- it's the little things- like taking a shower, making coffee- and, of course, playing with your grandson that make it worth getting out of bed for! |
Posted by Rhiannon Jones on 02/25/09 at 05:08 PM I like that the first and last stanzas, considered as a unit, can stand on their own. |

Posted by Terry Olynik on 02/25/09 at 06:17 PM I assumed this poem was going to be about mayflies.
Glad it wasn't. |
Posted by A. Paige White on 02/25/09 at 08:41 PM Isn't it amazing what those grandchilders do to us? And any poem with a dog named O D I E is a great one in my book. |
Posted by George Hoerner on 02/25/09 at 09:17 PM Another fine one Charlie, and dogs rarely seem to know which of have things they want to chase, smell, etc., but they do keep the day intersting. |

Congratulations on POTD, this gem really deserves it -- it's beautiful and alive, and it reads effortlessly, like that's where those words belonged all the time (am I making sense today?)...the ending is sweet, I know this feeling... |
