A Simple Divorce Would Suffice (Villanelle)

by Alison McKenzie

Epiphanies' pile of twisted shit
Dysfunction comes to light the way
Another mess, I must admit

A question posed, to answer it
Without a shade of pale to gray
Epiphanies’ pile of twisted shit

Employment of a lover's wit
A roasted crow, a full bouquet
Another mess, I must admit

A tendency to hawk and spit
A scrapbook rotted, old decay
Epiphanies’ pile of twisted shit

Our shattered hearts, the least of it
For rages sometimes held at bay
Another mess, I must admit

Thus ending in judicial writ
Enormous debt of counsel’s pay
Epiphanies’ pile of twisted shit
Another mess, I must admit

Author's Note: Another assignment for my poetry class, to write a Villanelle. 19 lines, 5 (3-line) stanzas with aba rhyme scheme in each, plus a final quatrain with an abaa rhyme scheme. WHEW!!! My first Villanelle!

I could never write one of these things. You, however, did pretty damn good.

A form I've never tried. You've done it justice.
