The Temptation of Victorian Friendship by Don Matley
Sharing humour others miss
Laughing simultaneous
Touching to commiserate
Staying up so very late
Having nothing at all to do
Going to events impromptu
Giving in to human weakness
Staying warm in the bleakness
Loving and respecting each other
As a sister does a brother
Sharing hurt and failure too
Unashamed to relate the true
Celebrating mutual successes
With the slightest of caresses
Saying goodnight and waving goodbye
Taking different paths we cannot deny
Longing for absences to end
Oh for aching hearts to mend!
Comforted in knowing at this time of loss
That our paths in life will often cross
And like these two lines coupled in verse
Our friendship intertwined will stay the worst.

| Posted by Kristina Woodhill on 01/13/09 at 11:00 PM I enjoyed the couplets (is that the right term?). The last line - that word "stay" made me think "remain" at first, then switched over to "survived", and that seemed to click OK. This is a solid sounding friendship. |

| Posted by Meghan Helmich on 01/14/09 at 02:57 PM the kind of relationship i haven't mastered. how it separates the lust from love. a brother and a sister. maybe being an only child dooms me to eternal and unbridled passion for anyone i get close to? sigh. great piece, don. |
