Flip a Penny

by Alison McKenzie

Flip a penny only
To reveal the tarnished
Opposite side, still
As appealing as
The shine of a new car

At first, the idea of his journey
Seemed novel and brave
Until it stretched into this desert,
A skewed reality,
The wavering distance
From one mirage to the next,
And he began to understand
The shine was only the heat
Making him thirsty for something
He would never reach.

The penny burnt a hole
In the shade.

There was no rest.

Only the flip of a penny
To reveal the tarnished.

And for some reason there are times when no polish has enought strength to make them shine. Really nice write Alison.

I'd like to see the polish that could clean up that kind of tear. Really great read.

...ahh i love this ... the way it swoops and darts; your choice of words/metaphors remind me of the Little Prince: he too was searching for verdant pastures [within a desert] and he was told ...'the beauty in a desert is that it holds an oasis.' your pome is an oasis, your are too. great paint-job on a classic chasis.

"The penny burnt a hole In the shade." I love how you flipped this penny around and over - very clever and very revealing.

Wow Alison, I'm not even sure a can of Coke could make this penny shiny again. Great read.

Stunning and beautifully done, dear one. I truly adore your spirit that catches the best poetry from some of the hardest heartaches you face. Beautiful!
