Is Silence Golden

by George Hoerner

and if you were
halfway round
this world
would the words
be any less
forthcoming
than if you were
right next door
could you speak
to me any less
than not at all

for a continent away
leaves language less
mindful of those days
as children playing
to be adults
we spoke our minds
thinking that was
being so

and now as adults
we speak of
the weather
more than all else
or those fleeting holidays
counted month by month
till they are gone
following us
to our silent graves

I love this one George and have written a few recently with the exact same premise. How is it that people who are geographically close to each other, who love each other, who are related to each other, who know each other, face to face... oftentimes find themselves in a world where nothing seems to matter, filled with glimpses of phrases that are nothing more than the politically correct pseudo mumbo-jumbo phrase of the day. And yet, these same people are oh, so kind and considerate to others who have no impact on their lives other than perhaps a working relationship of some kind, a professional association of some type....why, oh why? Thank you for writing this thought provoking piece. Aloha... alisa ;-)

Yes it is golden, but silver too....

Like this alot, it reminds me of the fact that the word 'listen' contains the same letters as the word 'silent.' Thanks

it is kind of saddening that we often neglect those who are within our arms reach. you made it beautiful though. bravo George.

In this age of cell phones, emails, etc, nobody seems to talk to each other. If they do, they don't listen. We live in a self absorbed world where communication is a problem. Great write- one to think and TALK about!

that first stanza is so subtle and so beautifully written, setting the stage for the rest of the thought provoking trip and it is always a delight, George, to be a passenger on your lovely word train.
