selfishness stunts your growth

by Nanette Bellman

i'm going to need more
than a spoonful of sugar
to help this medicine go down.
because somehow,
swallowing this
means giving up, to me.
and i can't see it any other way.

how many times do i have to hear
that this is for my own good?
how many times does someone
have to repeat it?
how many times till i get it?

till i understand
that this isn't surrendering
or that just because
this was brought on by someone else
for a fair enough reason
which is why i think of it
as waving a white flag
or putting my tail between my legs

because i'll admit it right here,
i'm too selfish to see anything else
but how i feel.

I have felt that way about two things. In the end, it was for the best, but it killed me to admit it at the time.

I really like the straight forward march of this one.

aaaah, i think you and i are in the same boat. when things are going bad, and you see the obvious way out, you still don't want to take it because it DOESN'T seem like the best answer to you. it seems like the way to kill yourself a little more for the sake of others.

I love the flow of this and, of course, the message. Excellent Nanette!
