Red Cape

by David Hill

I believe in humankind
in Communist doctrine,
but only on paper…

We the people, are distracted.
Julius Rosenberg was on a mission
and Ethel filled the space at his side,
Commie partners in crime,
faces on which to hang fear.
Secrets shared with our Russian ally,
I mean enemy, it gets so Orwellian,
let’s wave the red cape!
Trial twists and traitorous turns
philosophy turned sophomoric
double-speak, legal-speak,
how dangerous can an Ethel be?

Decree: Vaporize them
like Japanese playground children.

Now JR and Harry,
different matters entirely.
The buck stops here:
J. Robert Oppenhiemer
Father of the A-bomb
Rapist father.
Harry S Truman
Hiroshima.
but why the encore?
Nagasaki.

Traitors in our midst.

You write of a different time, a whole different culture in many respects. Interestingly you leave a cloud as to who the traitors are. Or maybe not. I for one, believe President Truman by his courageous act saved thousands of lives on both sides. Oppenheimer an open question. Rosenburgs probably would not have been executed now. We have to pertuate destruction! Obviously you have written a very thoughtprovoking poem.

I like the implications of the red cape. Although what you have written is looking back, I see so many red capes waving at this moment in time - many that have been rushed headlong into with ongoing regrettable consequences. Your poem is very thought provoking. Thank you.
