Ruby

by Vikki Owens

If I had a daughter,
which I did once,
but she died,
or rather,
never lived,
If I had a daughter
I might name her Ruby.

I think that the traits
that the name Ruby embodies,
the ruddiness, the fire,
the spark of life, the ember,
would be a good gift
to give a daughter of mine.

When I imagine the
daughter I had once,
then lost,
she seems like a ruby
shining inside me,
a little red, faceted thing,
that was precious
yet lost
like the stone in a ring.

Agem, this. And she (Ruby) would be, too... I can just sense it.

You have a lovely touch with this. Ruby was one of my grandmothers. It is a great name.
