The Chameleon

by Amanda Bullington

Your jeans mark the end of our friendship.
Never again could I befriend someone so willing
To change his skin
Again and again.

Those khakis you’ve worn for so long are gone
Now that you feel the need to fit in
Outside of your skin.

[You think others won’t see through
This denim exterior to the slime on your body
And your protruding scales and tail]

It’s funny that the day you left me
Is the day you began to dress anew

Oh, the significance of your new
Life without me.

I like how much restrained venom flows through this thing. It never comes off bitter. Good stuff.
