Symbols 1

by George Hoerner

thimbles become symbols
in the hands of a seamstress
as are rag tag flags held
by the knights on the battle field

rings are a thing on husband and wife
even if later they cause great strife
symbols on the store front XXX
seem to represent forbidden sex

pins in the doll put on a hex
in the skin cause a reflex
writings in the bible
can seem somewhat tribal

words on a page
might come from a sage
each word a different symbol
before which i tremble

searching through the dictionary
i need to find an intelligent fairy
as i continue to search
for the meaning of this word
truth

Any poem that starts, sew well,
with a thimble full of symbols
should weave the chase for truth
throughout the tale....
;-D Great job, George!

You are anthropologist, linguist, philosopher, humorist, psychologist, and, oh yes, poet - all in 21 lines. Fun and thought-provoking at the same time. The meaning and import of that little 5 letter symbol has so often elluded me as well. It is good to find another who has ruminated - but you with such skill and depth of thought.

Your use of everyday items as symbols makes me tremble at what comes next - "Symbols II"? Brilliant dance of words as symbols and images.
