Do We Think?

by George Hoerner

we think we've come far
from the caves of Altamira
we've seen such sites
many thousands of nights

we use utensils to eat our meat
and wear shoes upon our feet
we kill more than they could
we've been so misunderstood

look at how we've helped mankind
and taught him to be so refined
he apologizes for collateral damage
but continues on his rampage

how far have we come
from Eden to Mars
from the trees to the stars
what have we learned

as we stretch the bounds
and push the envelope
till we find ourselves
at the end of our rope

still our ego says go
and our minds say so
reach for that bell
till we end up in hell

Great word play in this. It's got such great movement going for it, I could really see this being even more effective in a spoken-word setting.

...yo, george...we must think that way by evidence of our 'doing' it...de facto, eh? good one.

I heartily concur, George, the more we ring the bell of change the more we remain clanging in hell. it appears Paradise is lost to us in a blink because we think. The more we think, the more we stink up what remains of Paradise. Let us not think so much as put our faith in love, which is the only road back.
