Jelly Bean by Ken Harnisch“Jelly Bean is a nice name for a girl,” she said
Though no girl was she, and in no mood for levity was I.
She said it was because she liked jelly beans,
Which I got, even in my dimming perception
Of nuance and efflorescence
Presumed by her to be lost, I guess,
To the calendar or the winds of
Hurricane Ike
But I softened when I realized
It was only the little girl in her,
Wanting to have her day.
Having had the little boy in me
Go out to play for so long
I had forgotten the need
That others have to be innocents again.
“Though some men have taken a piece of me,”
She said, putting her past out there again,
“Few have tasted what I am, or always
Hoped to be.”
Their loss, I murmured, finally freeing
My soul to join in small communion
With hers, and my smile to crease
The afternoon; at last, at last. 11/24/2008 Author's Note: And the game commences again, M!
