burning woman by Mary Frances Spencershould have said it
didnt
couldnt
stuck in the
maybe this time
intuition
sputters when shut down
indignant truth
burns anyway through
the boundaries of civility
leaving the same outcome
scorched regret
and those in the vicinity
singed
around the edge
of the fire
11/12/2008 Author's Note: This is what happens when I ignore my instinct and don't speak up. the outcome was what I though would happen anyway, and would have been better to just express myself in that moment. Anyone else relate? MFS

Posted by Gregory O'Neill on 11/13/08 at 07:21 AM I've camped around that fire some. It's the smell of our better sensibilities going up in smoke, when we sometimes clam-up too quickly. For one's self there must be no compromise with that which one knows to be the lower value. Well and poetically said, MFS. Thank you. |
Posted by George Hoerner on 11/13/08 at 03:10 PM I stopped throwing water on that fire a long time ago. It almost got me fired once but I survived. Really well said MSF. One can be civil and still make a point. But sometimes.... incivility comes boiling over. |
Posted by Kristina Woodhill on 11/13/08 at 04:19 PM Really a timely poem for post election season, although I can sure relate to this at my former work place also. I like your "stuck in the maybe this time" phrase. |
Posted by Charlie Morgan on 11/13/08 at 07:53 PM ...a tough call, every time...should I?, should I not?...it's a coin-toss...good succinct-very/real write... |
Posted by Laura Doom on 11/24/08 at 07:01 PM I guess it depends - upon whom you're communicating with and how well you 'know' them. Intuition is a two-way thing - knowing yourself is an integral part of it, and something you have displayed here. Mostly I wish hindsight could be accessed before the event :) A social dilemma well addressed here... |
