Marriage

by George Hoerner

Prelude:

Ah love, could thou and I with fate conspire
To grasp this sorry scheme of things entire
Would not we shatter it to bits and then
Remould it nearer to the hearts desire!

11th century mathematician – poet

--------------------

tis February and all is love
where hides the dove
wrapped in fate
lost in hate

this thing called civil or un union
drivel to hide our missed communion
marriage doesn't need
the partner love to be

let us define 'marriage'
what part does love play
or is it just for piety
we loath and disparage

to those who or don't - see
that two who love are lost to all
does it matter if it be she and he?
comes the answer that should not appall

even if it be he and he
or she and she
that two souls spoke and each heard
and understood the others words

A fine blend of past and present, since it all comes out to the same thing in the end.

Yes...that's what it's all about really. Well said! MFS

"Remold it nearer to the hearts desire" - what a timely poem in view of the California vote. Your poem seems especially poignant when I think of those many who are "lost to all" in their love, yet frustrated by entropy of our society.
