Halloween 2008

by Christopher Shin

Lock the doors
and bar the windows
the autumn leaves
burn with fever.

Long lost friends
and lovers gone,
but in this moment
the red remembers
all.

Flickering and licking
they dine and splash
as ghostly hands
dig and bellow.

I stare blankly with
broken thoughts
and a cemented heart
that tries to beat
against the grainy
gray block.

In it all the sounds
do come in as goblins
and monsters gnash
their broken teeth.

Yet my soul is long
gone and my heart
is forever shattered
in peace.

I really like this, especially stanza 4. There is something about that "grainy gray block". Great first line.
