MAY WE (A DUET) by David Garner
TOM:
Falling in love is more like rising in love.
I am rising.
I am rising.
I've always been attracted to the older kind,
But this feeling's new.
It's because of you,
I am rising.
You're everything I've ever wanted,
Everything and more.
CLAIRE:
You're nothing like the kind of boy I thought I'd settle for.
TOM:
You speak fluent French;
It drives me wild.
CLAIRE:
You are younger than my youngest child.
TOM:
You're cultured and well-traveled.
You dress with grace and flair.
CLAIRE:
I wish you knew the meanings of "suave" and "debonair".
TOM:
I like to be supported and never go to work.
CLAIRE:
At least you could bus tables or be a grocery clerk.
TOM:
You're up early in the morning,
And go to bed in early evening.
CLAIRE:
I like to do the things you like,
But it seems you're always sleeping.
TOM:
Your glasses have bifocals,
And your hair is turning gray.
CLAIRE:
I like it when your hormones race
When I say, "S'il vous plait."
TOM:
But there's something quite endearing
About the difference in our age.
CLAIRE:
I miss that boyish innocence and that silent rage.
TOM:
It's true you make me truthful.
CLAIRE:
It's you who makes me youthful.
TOM:
Is marriage really such a must?
CLAIRE:
Is this really love or only lust?
TOM:
It's really kind of scary.
CLAIRE:
What the hell? Let's marry.
If you would pop the question...
TOM:
I need to take it slow.
CLAIRE:
...I need to let you know:
TOM:
May we please take our time?
CLAIRE:
Mais oui would be my answer. Mais oui!
TOM:
May we just live together?
CLAIRE:
I know it's time to walk down the aisle.
TOM:
May we take it nice and slow?
CLAIRE:
Mais oui! Mais oui! Mais oui!
TOM:
May we? May we? May we?
CLAIRE:
"Mais oui!" will be my answer!
Mais oui! Mais oui! Mais oui!
TOM:
May we please take our time?

Posted by Kristina Woodhill on 10/25/08 at 05:52 PM Different worlds meet and you create magic. What a treat to read this dialogue, the play on words, the acknowledging differences, the willingness to go forward. |

Posted by Nicole D Gregory on 10/26/08 at 02:06 AM I applaude you! Your style and ease with this piece is VERY State Street/Division corner melody... constant and real. Really enjoyed this! ~N |
Posted by Alison McKenzie on 10/26/08 at 03:56 PM There is so much genius here. The style is so different than anything I've ever encountered. Even if I didn't personally relate to almost every word, I would be enamoured with this piece! The nuance in the dialouge is so abundant, I've read and re-read so I don't miss it. Awesome! |
