St. Vedast-alias-Foster (London)

by Peter Humphreys

silent church
redolent with spirit
between
the Great Fire
and
the Blitz
only you stand
as I sit
in the side pews
light
two candles
for us
and then
by the sanctuary wall
beneath a small Icon
of Our Lady
I dream
in prayer
of those I love
those unloved
those unlived
in the Babylon
outside
'twixt Barbican
and
Threadneedle Street.

Author's Note: Having been rebuffed from St. Paul's Cathedral because there were VIPs visiting and then told it would cost £10 to visit the next day, I crossed the road and entered a beautiful Medieval Church named after a 6th Century French Saint. It was so much more beautiful than St Paul's and I was not charged to pray!

I always enjoy your wanderings, taking me to solid places and experiences. Seems you got the best of the two in this crossing the road.
