Adventure Boy

by Alison McKenzie

He’s nine days old.
Already I can see the adventure
In his dark little eyes,
The stories just waiting
To pour from pristine lips
And majestic hands,
His ultra-long fingers
Already hankering to touch it all.

His lanky limbs air-swim
Making ready for flight,
The running and hopping and playing
Making ready for reality
Warrior rising to the challenge of his name.

And the sweetness his Daddy delivers
In the carefully wrapped packages
Of words and caress
And his Mama,
His sustenance and heroine.

And all of us beyond,
His stalwart fans and loved ones,
Those of us who will invest our hearts
And resources to see that he is well,
Always.
The first of the next generation of hope
Our adventure boy.
