a surprise

by Peter Humphreys

the wind
came
unexpectedly
from the North

it broke branches
scattered leaves
tipped
the water bucket
and
frightened
our cat

Triona
was not
impressed

I
was not
best pleased

hanging
on to
my precious elder
drenched to the skin
numb to the bone
fumbling
for scissors
in the dark
mouth stuffed
with weak rope

yes
it must be
Autumn
because
the weather
is better
than
last summer

Author's Note: A night when I thought the wind would snap my elder and the old rope was just not strong enough to hold it. But as I write this, the elder is still laden with berries at the end of the garden. So the weak rope must have been stronger than I thought or maybe just the elder!

Alive with what the seasons will throw at us. I have to ask about the rope in mouth?? Great last stanza.

A fine write Peter. My dog gets very nervous when he hears the wind whistle around our place.
