Ode To My Body by Don Matley
My time is near
Only a few grains left
The sifting sand is all but gone
And yet I do not fear
My estate is in order
And I have bid a final adieu
To all friends and loved ones
But I must not forget my closest friend
You have ever been the shadow of my mind and soul
When my brain wanted your toes to wriggle
You readily complied
And your feet have never led me astray
Always helping me stand like a rock
Against lifes windy travails.
Your knees trembled but held when I asked my love to marry,
And your powerful thighs propelled me across the goalines of life
And no doubt now, this the final race.
Your stomach managed to process all the rich food I consumed
Without gassing me to a premature death !
And your lungs always kept me in good breath.
Your arms swung a club so fine and true on the course of life,
And your neck always craned to check out what to do.
Your ears rewarded me with the cry of the loon,
And your nose the perfume of burning leaves.
Your eyes spied the women who made me swoon
As they came and went across my path in Eliot style,
And your lips tasted and took in fine kisses with ease.
So all in all you did me proud.
And I now shout praises to your corporeal wonders aloud,
And leaving you as I do so now
I am consoled by the knowledge
That all of your parts will never rust
As you metamorphose from your ashes into dust.
