Observed Language

by Ryan Nardi

Watch them work around it,
fumble with this
unwieldy material,
words they don't understand.

Emotional creatures all,
they chatter squirrel chirps
at their peers and pieces
of plastic satellites in their hands.

Who am I to judge?
Do I speak monkey talk jangle bang
better than the dogs
or the chicken clique/goat group?

I watch them in stone cages
and on electric pages of light.
I watch them smack two rocks
and get a spark but never fire.
