Ventriloquist

by George Hoerner

i'm tired of this bullying
someone is pulling
my strings again
and i feel the pain

talking for me too
that is why i'm blue
you always give me words
stumbling over the syllable that's third

but i guess that'll have to do
since i can't bid you adieu
and i have so few words of my own
but that is so over blown

there are only so many
why i know at least twenty
look at all the pages
filled by all the sages

and poets by the score
from pens their words do pour
of love and loss and yearning
but do you find them earning

if they really made any sense
they might be making some cents

this ventriloquist could describe quite a few influences in our lives which as much as we love them, still we need a haven and a respite from. the muse for instance who is persistently goading us to locate the higher ground in ourselves, still as much as we love her, and appreciate what she does for us, still we need a breather now and then, as we do with whomever others are great influences in our lives, even our own peculiar voices stirring from within which many sometimes be confused with muses, but are distinct.
