Petrachor

by Laurie Duncan

Southern noons langour on peeling porches,
unwelcome as stray dogs and odorous;
ladies do not complain, but flutter
with fanning leaves like expiring flowers.
Heat fills every pore with steam,
presses the shadows half-starved of rest.
Unpaid workers in cheap plaid shirts pause
to light cigarettes, shake off dust,
and look up to the blue drained gray.
And with those first unexpected drops,
the sun-parched streets exhale with a force,
the way my mouth hungers for you.

This has a slow southern drawl narration sound in my head, and it lingers even after I have quit reading, leaving me longing for lemonade and a shade tree...great word usage and form. smh

I love every*thing about this poem. The force it exhales in closure is divine. Oh! such a POTD to welcome this sun-day. Congrats.

Wow! How did I miss this one? Congrats on POTD. Some of my favorite phrases - "peeling porches", "shadows half-starved of rest", "the blue drained gray", and of course the two last lines.

so many lovely images-- the first ("peeling porches") had me hooked.

Congratulations on POTD! A well word drawn picture of a sounthern summer day. The last line a bit jarring on the mind--making the connection.
