...finally...

by Chris Sorrenti

after 50 years
I’ve learned what to say
what not to say
when to say a little
when to say enough
when to say nothing
and when to say a lot

after 50 years
I’ve learned how to read people’s faces
identify their body language
plot the colors of an aura
and in these things
sooth the distressed
with the appropriate wisdom
comfort those hurting
with the right combination
of voice and touch
celebrate the victories
of loved ones and stranger alike
and in so doing
I’ve learned what needs to be known
about myself
who I am
where I’m going
what I have yet to become

after 50 years
of learning
how to do all these things
I take comfort
in that as a result
others are comfortable with me
