the difference between awake and asleep

by Jared Fladeland

blue red green double u.

i can't think slow enough to keep up with the pen.
the life is one of total inner thought
unrestricted by worldly thought.
when i die i will fold myself up in a box
plant myself into the ground
and grow twenty feet up towards heaven.

slowly slowly slowly i will lift myself up to heaven
after i shed the pounds of chains around my neck.
heaven is an infinite like a dream that never ends
i watch my hands turn to ashes
and I'm suddenly a puddle upside down.

the hurt one feels in life is the gravity of sin
pulling us down. but we can raise
we can raise
we can raise if we only dream a little harder
until all the skyscrapers melt into the streets
and mountains cave into graves
and people look like half-crazed machinists
who speak to each other in a new language
where love is the only music spoken
and thoughts only revolve around how we're all connected
and only by being so connected can we, as a world,
lift ourselves to heaven.

for now i must settle for bad dreams
and poor thoughts.
the buzz of a cold, cruel, concrete world
bothers me like a splinter underneath my thumbnail.

for now i stay awake at night.

Ooooh, a fine ending line, after some unsettling visuals.
