Guest Room

by Matthew Zangen

These walls are mute,
built of wood, which burns
better than blood,
but they shall sleep
with many sounder souls hereafter.

If they could speak,
these walls would lie;
they know mouths hold ghosts
worse than rope-burned rafters,
and spread the stain much faster.

I really like the phrase of the "mouths..... spread the stain faster".
