balance beam by Sandy M. Humphreydelicate balance
arms outstretched trying
to maintain
some sense of form
and beauty
while walking
a small beam
of control
even though around
me chaos
is clammering
for attention
telling me
I have support
yet the beam
seems to narrow
and I am not graceful
with one foot
in front of the other
I wobble forward
sometimes stepping
backward to regain
stability for this
time if I tumble
fall face first
or sideways
it will not be
just me that fails
but someone precious
counting on me
to reach the other side
for she is following
close behind
head held high
no fear
her boundaries undefined
by this narrow
beam we are walking on
assuring me all will be alright
as sometimes she cartwheels
right past moving faster
than I feel is appropriate
for that is what youth
will do no mind
paid to the consequences
though it is all I
think about these days
that and what we all stand
to lose if we fall 07/27/2008 Posted on 07/27/2008 Copyright © 2025 Sandy M. Humphrey
