Comedian in Concert.

by Andrew S Adams

most moments pass like this one:

as we anticipate the antithesis
to the emptiness we've endured thus far,
we sit passively waiting for someone to
turn off the house lights and raise
the screen in front of the stage;

we fill the time with idle conversation and
we fill the air with cigarette smoke,
waiting for the performer to take the stage
and when the time finally comes,

the screen is lifted to reveal a mirror;
a comedian whose one joke
is so bad we can't help but laugh
about how completely we've been had.
