petal girls

by Sophia Grace

you always came around in the spring.
striding across the budding carpet,
leaving chaotic boot-prints smashed in
the wildflower fields.

diving into the river, our clothes left
crumpled on the bank, i'd chase you (or
was it the other way around?) and we'd
laugh, our voices echoing, bouncing off
of the cliff-walls.

our bed was soft-grass and a weeping
willow canopy, the wind tickling us,
delighting in our freedom. lying
down next to you, petal-skin, petal-lips,
petal-girl.

i wanted to unwrap you! peel back your
lilac petals until there was nothing
left and see what was inside. what was i
expecting? a rare jewel? a ball of light?

it is winter now in persephone's garden.
i curl up in broken-leaves and feel panic
vines gripping my insides - tight. the sun
stretches its feeble rays through the
clouds, but you will not be back this
spring for petal-girls wilt and you,
my love, are growing weeds.

Author's Note: I finally found a whole archive of work that I thought had been lost. I'm trying to rework some of it but will have to get around to it later.

I'm sure glad you found this piece. Great write. Ah, to be young and half innocent again.

There's so much here, such rich imagary. I love especially the "budding carpet" and also the surreal "peeling" I can almost see a painting of it. The strong sad ending, a rapid change and wistful ending, is good too, because all the rest is so luxuriously beautiful.

I enjoyed the brash entrance in the first stanza, the implied flower of the petal girls is very cool, especially felt the vine gripping insides, and that ending accusation gives the metaphor almost a winter quality. Thank you.
