Brooklyn thru My Eye

by Kristi Paik

A Street with broken cement and a coke can embezzled into the ground.
A pothole that’s been there for far too long,
And there planting trees all over the neighborhood.

Some old lady is running the operation,
Walking around with three construction workers indicating where the trees will soon be.
They mark it with what appears to be chalk.
She has white hair, a salmon colored shirt and takes suggestions from the people of the neighborhood.
A little black Car is blasting reggeaton, revving up the engine
The echo of the music can still be heard as he fly’s down the street.

Can’t focus much here.
Kids walk by and in the pack I spot my loser friend
Walking, talking on her cell phone and bouncing a handball.
She’s changed a lot over the years.
A short street, with five houses total on both sides.

They all have gates. One is only a one story, but it’s pretty long

and there’s never any parking.

They're planting trees here in Queens too...and ironically, I was in Bklyn today, where we were commenting about all the trees there in Greenpoint
