Jackpot!

by George Hoerner

back a few tick tocks
on times' eternal clock
the world was large
the inhabitants small

Adam and Eve alone
in this world
the apple portrayed
but could not convey
their proclivity
to procreate

the world was large
and they were alone
but not for long
as the small family
enlarged to a small community
from 2 in 70,000 BC
to 200,000 when JC was born

almost triple now
the world was alive
with people still
unaware of much
surrounded them

so the second hand
on the infernal clock
moves to the year 1000
when 300,000
roamed this huge globe

another tic on the
eternal clock
and the urge to splurge
pushes our number
to twice as much in 1700

one hundred more seconds
and by 1900
we've passed a billion
now the race heats up
and by June 2, 2008
the globe is weighted down
by just under
7,000,000,000
we are aiming
for the jackpot

It is good to see your mathematical side come out here and in such a fun way. It DOES seem like the Earth is weighed down by our particular species. Especially when I watch the evening news. Thinking about the work you had to put into gathering the evidence underneath your poem makes me tired. Good work, my friend.
