Time to Think

by Brian Francis

Mornings seem to come earlier here of late.
When silence wakes me in the darkness
sleep dances away on thoughts of you.

Coffee taste more bitter, much like life.
Yet, a little more sugar can make it bearable;
though much more messy when it spills.
Much like life.

I catch the sunrise every day now.
Yet it always somehow passes the horizon
without my noticing,
until its glaring rustles my thoughts
and I draw in its warmth like a breath.

Dreary days pass on endlessly
as I work, accomplishing little that I’d planned.
Often finding myself with hands poised
ready to strike keys, lost in thought,
time passing with hours seeming minutes.

Gin is a good friend; Sapphire’s taste
goes down cleanly, with just a bit of bite.
Two fingers become four and even more
until I stumble to the bed and pass into sleep.

Why is it, I wonder, that all that's left in the end is the crystal clear memory of the love that was shared, and the sharp, pungent pain of being without it? Beautiful write, Brian.

Nice write Brian. Gin never helped me forget that much. It did help me get to sleep from time to time. But life is like that and many things fade but somehow the hurt is always just a sunrise away.

Super poem, Brian. I can certainly relate.

A wistfulness pervades and a musing sense, reflected in pace and style. The first line is wonderful. The idea that mornings come earlier (and they do now) the sense of the present "here" and now, and the mix of "earlier" and "of late" makes for a singing, low-key line that memorably set the mood. I like the mix of bitter and sweet, and true, of life. Also the specific of "Sapphire" is evocative and adds detail, and the clarity, and "just a bit of bite" gives a fine finish.
