Up by Frankie SanchezI am a profound believer in the idea
that one will meet far more interesting people in a stairwell
than one will ever meet in an elevator,
because stairwellers are all here for the same reason, knowing
that nothing resolves as immediate and with as much certainty as a nightmare,
that nothing fades as opulent and as promiscuous as a sunset,
and that nothing appears as benevolent and as genuine as a storm cloud.
It's the knowing this that allows us to advance,
achieving each relative step,
one at a time,
elevated, like islands
that didn't rise over night- they evolved-
over time, with progress, like humans
who know that we can do this ourselves, without hydraulics.
Knowing
that although nothing spell-checks happiness better than technology,
and although nothing gets us closer to the future
than being able to defy gravity in a metal box,
still nothing translates as honest and as rewarding as experience.
Knowing
that you can not always rely on the push/push/push of a button
to get you where you are destined to go. 05/29/2008 Author's Note: (((and returning him safely to the earth.

| Posted by Kristi Paik on 05/30/08 at 11:00 PM Frankie i love your writing! you come up with the most amazing metaphors with everyday things and that, my friend, is truly great writing. thanks for sharing this great work :) |
| Posted by Steven Kenworthy on 06/02/08 at 09:02 PM this poem is making me think very hard. i love the subconscious thought process of the true artist it took to come up with this revolutionary ideal that "stairwellers" are far more interesting people...the oddest thing is when i really think about it, i feel that at some point in my life i may have shared a similar thought. i never take the elevator. yes, indeed we cannot always push the button to fast forward into our own future, yet instead we have to glide through the good experiences and gag down the worst ones...that is living afterall. |
