insomniac by Sandy M. Humphrey
sleep sweet and deep
when morning comes
fast and you do not even
remember falling
dreams are elusive
arms stretch and reach
flexible not tense
and curled
the alarm clock
actually had the
chance to do its
job instead of
mocking you with
and hourly update
glaring bold and blue
reminders that night
would soon be morn
sleep relaxed and restfull
when you do not check
off the next day's
to do list while
sheep are jumping
fences baaing for
your attention
where monsters
do not chase
you awake into
the dreams of
the person sleeping
next to you
where you do not
synchronize your
breathing with the dogs
hoping it will lull
you into the same deep
nether realm she found so quickly
sleep calm peaceful
ever slipping through
my fluttering eyelashes
even through deep breathing
excercises caffeine famined days
counting backwards to
mind erasing nature sounds
and if by some miracle
I drift into a semi concious
state of dreamless euphoria
the cat next door meows
squirrels tap dance on the roof
signaling the once slumbering dog
it is time to howl at the moon
after all she can sleep while we are away

Posted by Charles E Minshall on 05/27/08 at 03:43 PM I spent a sleep deprived night last night with
my mind going a hundred miles an hour. Good poem
