Marching by Don Matley
Defying the bitter cold, ice, wind and snow
March invades subtlety with its warmer sun
Snow crystals somehow seem brighter
As they glisten,melt and die.
Soon meltwaters will bleed profusely down the hills, to rivers
Which will burst their swollen bellies
And threaten the lives of the innocent.
But Winter will regroup and form a hopeless counter attack
Of sudden surprise snowstorms, struggling with last gasps of cold and icy breath.
And the legions of April will come and finish the job
So that May flowers will bloom
And bees sting and mosquitoes pick.
The oppressive heat of August will lull one into a false sense of confidence
And stupor
As Winter will amass new forces, ready to March again.
